I think this "direction" was a real positive... in that it led a way OUT of the lack of painterliness that POP in general seemed to have. The whole Modern thing was saying Painting is Dead... and Les clearly saw that the only way for it to not be dead was to return to the "act of painting", only without the excess's of the Ab Ex guys. It's senseless to speculate, but I think (from what this series shows me), that he was both intellectually and aesthetically on his way to resolving the dilemma, at least for his own art.--Bill Dubin
